Recent non-invasive fieldwork in North Africa: new insights into the history of Sufetula (Sbeitla, Tunisia)
Ein Vortrag von Dr. Nicolas Lamare (Université de Picardie Jules Verne) in der Reihe "Mainzer Vorträge zur Römischen Archäologie" (MaVRA).
Since 2022, a new field project, resulting from a cooperation between the Université de Picardie in Amiens and the Institut national du Patrimoine in Tunisia, has been launched at the ancient site of Sufetula with the aim of improving our knowledge of its urban development in the longue durée. The town, which was probably founded in the middle of the 1st c. AD, was occupied until at least the middle of the 7th c. Settled in a regular grid pattern, we know mainly about its major buildings from the imperial period – the forum, baths and temples – and above all about the monuments from late antiquity – Christian basilicas and fortified houses. The first stages of the fieldwork consisted of several non-invasive operations, including geophysical survey, 3D laser scanning and sampling of carbonate deposits. These operations are already providing concrete information on the town's urban planning and history, as a prelude to carrying out a stratigraphic excavation in a sector of the urban centre.
